Center for Academic + Spiritual Life
New York University, New York
This project is located on the south side of Washington Square Park in New York City. When approaching from the north, the site is directly on axis with 5th Avenue and is framed by the view through the Washington Memorial Arch. The project serves as a gateway from the city to New York University.
The first of its kind, the exterior skin is adorned with a perforated screen made from water-jet cut natural stone.
While in the past screens have typically been constructed from metals, this project seeks to communicate a sense of permanence by utilizing a "heavy" material.
This was a project by Machado and Silvetti in Boston, with Gary Wang as Architect of Record in part, as the project manager.
